As
the government's Greenbelt Taskforce prepares to initiate
a public
consultation process for the Golden Horseshoe, Earthroots
is asking the
Province to expand its study area to include surrounding
regions such as
"South Simcoe" including Barrie and Kitchener-Waterloo.
While we applaud the McGuinty government's commitment
to create a Greenbelt around the GTA, we believe that
the study area needs to be expanded to achieve the Province's
goals of reducing sprawl. The governments' current plans
may unintentionally promote unbridled leapfrog development.
Beginning
May 20th, the Greenbelt Task Force will begin holding
a series of public consultations and stakeholder meetings
to ask Ontarians their views. These sessions will help
the taskforce craft its advice to the government on
how to most effectively establish a permanently protected
greenbelt.
